Labor Day Read-A-Thon!

I needed some motivation to get reading some of the books I've been dying to devour for the last month or so. Therefore, I've decided to participate in the Labor Day Read-A-Thon! It's hosted by Letters Inside Out and sign ups are still open!

I'm hoping to read these 3 books:

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake

Taken At Dusk by C.C. Hunter

So, that's what I'll be reading for this Read-A-Thon.

What will you be reading this Labor Day weekend?

PROMO STOP: "Savage" by Willow Rose

 Excerpt

I removed my clothes and followed her into the cold water that sprang from the center of the earth in a spring somewhere further north and therefore had the same temperature all year around.                                                                          “Are there any animals in this water?” I asked as she carefully took me by the hand and led me in.                                                                                            “There might be manatees,” she said with a shrug.                             “What about alligators?" I asked and turned as I thought I heard something move behind me in the water. “Someone told me that there are alligators in all waterholes in Florida.”                                                       She laughed. “There might be, but we rarely see them. Besides. It just makes it that more exciting, right?” She pulled my hand and drew me close to her. Our bodies felt warm against each other, her skin was soft, and touching it made me forget about animals in the water and the sounds of nature. I even forgot about my concerns as to hurting her and disappointing her parents. All I could think about was her and me, here right now in this water that was caressing our bodies. I kissed her again and held her naked body close to mine while allowing the passion to rise in me. Suddenly she pulled away from me. “Stop,” she whispered urgently. I looked at her and saw that the expression on her face had suddenly changed.                                                       “What’s wrong?” I asked sensing that my voice was shaking slightly. If it was out of fear or caused by the arousal I didn’t know.                                  “I thought I heard something.”                                                    “Like what?” She shook her head while her expression cleared. She smiled. “It was probably nothing.”

Review: Entangled (Spellbound #1)

Title: Entangled (Spellbound #1)
Author: Nikki Jefford
Publisher: Self Published
Pages: 303
Source: Author for Honest Review
My Rating: 5/5 Stars

Two months after dying, seventeen-year-old witch Graylee Perez wakes up in her twin sister Charlene’s body.

Until Gray finds a way back inside her own body, she’s stuck being Charlene every twenty-hour hours. Her sister has left precise instructions on how Gray should dress and behave. Looking like a prep isn’t half as bad as hanging out with Charlene’s snotty friends and gropey boyfriend.

The “normals” of McKinley High might be quick to write her behavior off as post-traumatic stress, but warlock Raj McKenna is the only person who suspects Gray has returned from the dead.

Now Gray has to solve the mystery of her death and resurrection and disentangle herself from Charlene’s body before she disappears for good.

My Review

*I received this book from the author for an honest review.*

This was a phenomenal read! I can honestly say I didn't expect much of this book. I started reading it, thinking it would turn out like one of those indie books that didn't live up to the summary. I then found myself completely hooked, taking baths instead of showers so that I could read at the same time! I would freak out when my iPod died on me after hours of reading. It's a very smooth read, the transition between chapters are not choppy and the plot really got to me. I laughed, I cried, and I ranted out loud to where people thought I was a kook yelling at voices in my head! The characters..oh the characters! You love to hate some of them and you come to absolutely adore others. This is one of those books you just have to pick up and not think twice about before reading; just read it! Definitely earned my 5 stars!

Review: The Future of Us

Title: The Future Of Us
Author: Jay AsherCarolyn Mackler
Publisher: Razorbill
Pages: 356
Source: My Library
My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

It's 1996, and Josh and Emma have been neighbors their whole lives. They've been best friends almost as long - at least, up until last November, when Josh did something that changed everything. Things have been weird between them ever since, but when Josh's family gets a free AOL CD in the mail, his mom makes him bring it over so that Emma can install it on her new computer. When they sign on, they're automatically logged onto their Facebook pages. But Facebook hasn't been invented yet. And they're looking at themselves fifteen years in the future.

By refreshing their pages, they learn that making different decisions now will affect the outcome of their lives later. And as they grapple with the ups and downs of what their futures hold, they're forced to confront what they're doing right - and wrong - in the present.

My Review

I can honestly say I adored this book! The year is 1996 and the authors made it seem so realistic. They take you back to when we were all just starting to get home computers or envying over the fact that our neighbors had one and we didn't. I was born in '95 so this would have taken place when I was only a year old, but I can still feel that connection with Josh and Emma. Not just over how Facebook didn't exist, but many factors that authors Jay and Carolyn made sure to include in the story. They even throw in what I found to be a funny fact about how someone posted a status about how they feel sorry for Pluto because it was always their favorite planet and Josh and Emma are pondering about what could possibly happen to Pluto in the future. I found it funny. Not sure why, but I did. (I guess I'm just cheesy like that.) This book has some other major aspects other than Facebook. Ofcourse, you have romance. BUT it's not you're average romance, all thanks to Facebook. This book made me smile through it all. To be quite honest, although it doesn't necessarily bash Facebook, it made me want to delete mine. I know I can't see my future on it, but it made me realize how much drama really does come of it, especially during you're teen years. This book does carry an awesome story about foreseeing the future and having the ability to manipulate it, but I think it also touches on some of today's social networking issues. This book definitely earned 4.5 stars from me. Just amazing. :)

"Beyond The Veil" COVER REVEAL!!

Quinn Loftis

Author Bio

Quinn is a 32 year old wife, mother, nurse, and writer, not necessarily in that order.  She lives in beautiful North West Arkansas with her husband, son and Nora their Doberman pinscher. She loves writing, reading, and crocheting. Her favorite holiday is Christmas, favorite book(s) is Pride and Prejudice, The Alpha and Omega Series by Patricia Briggs, and the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling. She loves to be silly and have fun, loves music and thinks there is no greater sound in the world than that of her little boy's laughter.
Now for the big cover reveal...

Book #5 in the "Grey Wolves" series

Though the Serbian pack has been brought to heel thanks to the downfall of their Alpha, the war is far from over.
Desdemona, a witch of unfathomable power, has escaped the wolves’ wrath, but she will not go quietly into the night. She takes refuge in a place where even the smallest sliver of light does not dare to enter. Though she had to flee, she has not given up on the treasure she wishes to acquire. Her depravity knows no bounds; she's even willing to search for the one who can assist her in opening a Veil that has not been opened in millennia – with good reason: the danger is incalculable.

Meanwhile, there are major changes rippling through the Romanian Grey wolves. Decebel has become Alpha to the Serbian pack in an effort to begin to unite the Canis lupis species. Their numbers are dwindling in the wake of the shortage of true mates and lack of offspring. The wolves are beginning to lose faith and darkness seems to be crashing in on them from all sides. But the winds of change are blowing, changes that will alter the future of not only the Canis lupis, but of another ancient race as well.

Amidst all of this, Sally is continuing to come to terms with her relationship with the playful, charming, flirty, unbelievably handsome bartender – who happens to be a member of the Romanian pack.
If all that weren’t enough, the Fates have decided to pay a little visit to Jen. It’s time to collect. She cheated the Fates of a life, her life. Now they want what they are due. The problem? It’s more than Jen is willing to pay.
Yes, the war is indeed far from over. Bargains will be struck, declarations will be made, sacrifices will be given, love will be tested, and trust will be questioned as evil makes its stand against them all.

Review: Awake At Dawn (Shadow Falls #2)

Title: Awake At Dawn (Shadow Falls #2)
Author: C.C. Hunter
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Pages: 383
Source: My Library
My Rating: 4/5 Stars

Step into the world of Shadow Falls, a camp that helps teens tap into their special…talents. Once you visit, you’ll never forget it—and you’ll never, ever be the same.

From the moment Kylie Galen arrived at Shadow Falls Camp, she’s had one burning question: What am I? Surrounded by vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, fairies and witches, Kylie longs to figure out her own supernatural identity…and what her burgeoning powers mean. And now she’ll need them more than ever, because she’s being haunted by a new spirit who insists that someone Kylie knows—and loves—will die before the end of the summer. If only she only knew who she was supposed to save. And how…

But giving Kylie the most trouble is her aching heart. Gorgeous werewolf Lucas left camp with another girl, but he’s still visiting Kylie in her dreams. And Derek, a sexy half Fae who’s always been there for her when she needed him, is pushing to get more serious—and growing impatient, especially when Lucas returns. Kylie knows she needs to decide between the boys, and it’s tearing her up inside.

Yet romance will have to wait, because something from the dark side of the supernatural world is hiding in Shadow Falls. It’s about to threaten everything she holds dear…and bring her closer to her destiny.

My Review

"Awake At Dawn" is the second installment in the Shadow Falls series. I was a huge fan of the first book, so although I was excited to know which direction the story went, I was nervous that the second book would just ruin it for me. That wasn't the case this time! This book continues the story of Kylie at Shadow Falls, a summer camp for supernatural teens. Kylie, obviously, is one of the supernaturals but nobody, not even herself, knows what she is. Holiday, camp leader, knows Kylie is special and believes that everything will eventually fall into place. Through this book, Kylie gets confused between two boys: Derek, whom she met at the camp, and Lucas, whom she's known since she was six years old. Derek is half fae, Lucas is a werewolf. A whole bunch of events happen through this, I won't summarize them all.

I gave this book 4 stars. I loved it! Most sequels can't come to match up with the first book, but this sequel was soo much better! I've come to seriously wish I was in Kylie's shoes right now, mostly because of Derek and Lucas (yummm!). You actually find out soooo much about Kylie and her journey in this book, it's amazing how they could make two more books to follow it! I can't wait to get my hands on the third book. I'm already going through withdrawal symptoms! :)

Review: Demonglass (Hexhall, #2)

Title: Demonglass (Hex Hall, #2)
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Pages: 359
My Rating: 4/5 Stars

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.

That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.

Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.

But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

My Review

Although I'm not providing spoilers for this book, if you have NOT read the first book in the series (Hex Hall), I highly advise that you DO NOT read this review!

Alright, so if you're still reading this, I'm assuming that you've read Hex Hall. As we all know, at the end of Hex Hall, Sophie announces that she wants to go through The Removal to get read of her powers after having to kill her great-grandmother, Alice, with a shard of Demon Glass. She's scared that she'll go psycho like Alice and Lucy, her grandmother. So in Demon Glass, it's nearing the end of the school year. Sophie's father, Head of the Council, shows up at Hex Hall to talk to Sophie about going through the removal. He makes a deal with her: If she spends the summer with him in England then he'll allow her to go through the removal. Of course, as any loving father would, he tries to change her mind through the whole trip. Will she go through with it after all?

Now, I absolutely loved the first book. I've seen reviews and ratings for Demon Glass and was wondering what exactly was missing for people to give it 2 stars. I personally loved this book a little more than the first. Rarely do I find a sequel that is even equally enjoyable to the first. This book was riveting, had me at the edge of my seat, and I even cried a few times. It is a great addition to the series and I cannot wait to read the next book!

Review: Goddess Interrupted

Title: Goddess Interrupted (Goddess Test, #2)
Author: Aimee Carter
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 296
My Rating: 4/5 Stars

 KATE WINTERS HAS WON IMMORTALITY.
BUT IF SHE WANTS A LIFE WITH HENRY IN THE UNDERWORLD, SHE'LL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT.
Becoming immortal wasn't supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she's as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he's becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate's coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry's first wife, Persephone.

 My Review

I can honestly say that I enjoyed the first book over this one by far. Aimee Carter still had me on edge, though. Kate's story continues when she returns to Eden Manor in the fall only to discover that an angry Titan is out to kill them all. So, ofcourse, Kate wants to be the heroine and save the day. As all of us readers know from previous experience with books, that's not always the smartest decision. She gets herself into deep shit, along with making herself insecure and jealous of her sister. Throughout this book, I honestly made a connection between Henry and Edward (from New Moon). Most of us readers loved Edward in Twilight, but when he left Bella in New Moon, we were like

You'll have pretty much the same reaction to Henry in this, except more like

So, if you've read the first book, this is a must-read. It's kinda-sorta fantastic. :)

Follow Friday- #3

Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee's View and
Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet other book bloggers!

This week's question is:
Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

When I'm in one of those don't-talk-to-me or don't-touch-me moods, I will typically lay on the couch the whole day and complete a book or two. When I'm in a happier state, I tend to not read as much. As my blog says, books are my Literary Getaway. :)
